MARKET COMMENTARY: NOVEMBER 2025

The headlines throughout the October month continued to highlight how uneven the current economic expansion has become. Inflation continues to stick around 3%, lower than the peaks of recent years but stubbornly resistant to further progress putting the Federal Reserve in a delicate balancing act—acknowledging signs of labor softening while unable to declare victory on inflation. With portions of the government still partially shut down and certain data delayed, the picture remains hazy, which has only reinforced the Fed’s cautious tone. Markets have grown comfortable with this “higher for not as long” framework, though the path forward will likely depend on whether inflation resumes its downward drift or settles into something more structural.

At the same time, the corporate landscape is shifting in ways that are increasingly visible. The wave of AI-driven investment that dominated headlines earlier in the year has entered a new phase, where capital expenditures on data centers, servers, and compute infrastructure are becoming a defining feature of corporate spending. Yet this investment boom has come with a cost—white-collar layoffs are broadening across industries as companies reallocate capital from people to machines. While there is more nuance surrounding this shift from company to company it’s hard to view updates as just a technology focused story anymore; it’s a structural reshaping of the broader economy, one that will likely support productivity over time but create friction in the near term as displaced workers adjust and as the service economy absorbs the shock.

Beneath the surface, stress is also building in less visible corners of the financial system. The bankruptcy of First Brands, a large private credit borrower, has drawn attention to the speed and size of this still lightly regulated market. With years of easy money and aggressive underwriting now meeting a higher-rate environment, cracks are starting to form. Regulators have begun to take notice, but it remains unclear how widespread the ripple effects might be. For now, we continue to see an economy supported by resilient spending and transformative investment, but one that’s also showing the early tremors of adjustment—where credit conditions, labor trends, and inflation each tug in different directions. It’s a reminder that even in a year defined by progress, with most asset classes exhibiting positive returns thus far, the relationship between growth and stability remains a balancing act.
