The Advisor I’d Hire If I Weren’t One

Follow Nick on LinkedIn

This is a question I’ve thought about more than you might expect: If I walked away from WellFull tomorrow and had to hire an advisor for my own family, what would I actually look for? I’m not asking this for the marketing piece or the polished answer, but what would genuinely matter to me when my money, my family, and my future were on the line?

Here’s where I’d start.

Planning First. Full Stop.

The most common question I get from people is some version of: “What’s my number?” I understand why they ask it. It feels like the right question, but in practice, it’s one of the least useful places to start.

A number without context is arbitrary. It doesn’t know what you want your life to look like. It doesn’t know how you think about risk, or what you’re building toward, or what would actually make you feel secure. Without a real plan underneath it, investing becomes guesswork or recommendations that may or may not align with the life you’re trying to build.

The advisor I’d hire would lead with planning, not as a formality or a document that gets filed away, but as the actual foundation for every decision. Investments follow the plan. The plan doesn’t follow the investments.

Creativity on the Investment Side

This one matters more than most people realize. If all you need is a standard public market allocation, there are plenty of groups that offer that at a low cost. That’s not a knock; it’s just the reality of what commoditized investment management looks like today.

I’d want an advisor who thinks beyond that. I’d want someone who is genuinely exploring the alternative investment landscape and looking for ways to build a portfolio that isn’t just a variation of what everyone else has. I’m not looking for complexity for its own sake but for real creativity in how assets are structured and where opportunities are being sourced.

For high-net-worth families especially, the difference between a thoughtful investment approach and a templated one can compound over time in ways that are hard to overstate.

Trust That’s Earned, Not Sold.

This one probably should have come first.

I’ve seen what it looks like when someone is sold into an advisor relationship. There’s a transaction quality to it: a pitch, a close, a handshake. When markets get difficult or circumstances change, that foundation doesn’t hold. What you want is someone you actually trust, built on a relationship that developed over time around your real goals and your real life.

The advisor I’d hire would be someone my family felt genuinely comfortable with. I’m not saying comfortable in a vague way, but comfortable in the way that if something hard happens financially? I want my first instinct to be to call them because I see them as an asset to my family. What if something happens to me? Do I have confidence that they will help guide my spouse through what comes next and provide financial leadership? Do you think they would be capable of showing up like that?

What This Actually Reveals

I didn’t come up with this list arbitrarily. These are the same things we try to get right at WellFull every day, and thinking through them honestly is a good reminder of why they matter.

Planning that connects money to life, investment thinking that goes beyond the obvious, and a relationship built on trust over time—none of those are revolutionary ideas. In practice, however, they’re rarer than they should be, and they’re the difference between an advisor who manages your money and one who actually helps you build something.

If you’ve been wondering whether your current setup is really delivering on all three, that’s probably worth a conversation. I’d love to have one with you; reach out anytime.
